Police officer who fatally shot Jordan Edwards is fired

After a quick investigation, the Balch Springs, Texas police chief has fired the officer who triggered the deadly rifle shot, ultimately murdering the black teenager, NPR reports.

The department's account of what happened in the shooting changed after Haber admitted Monday that a vehicle full of teens was driving away from police when an officer armed with a rifle fatally shot the teenager in the head.

Balch Springs Police Chief Jonathan Haber said at a Tuesday news conference that Oliver had violated the department policy, though he did not explain which policies he was referring to or how Oliver violated them.

Haber said Oliver violated several policy violations but stopped short of detailing them, citing the officer's right to appeal his termination.

Police originally claimed that the teenagers' vehicle had been reversing "in an aggressive manner" toward officers, but Mr Haber admitted on Monday that video proved that the vehicle was actually driving away.

"I take responsibility for that", Haber said, and added that Oliver's behavior "did not meet our core values".

"After Jordan's two brothers, Vidal and Kevon, along with their two friends, were forced to experience this tragedy up close as occupants of the vehicle, they were immediately treated as common criminals by other officers; manhandled, intimidated and arrested, while their brother lay dying in the front seat", a statement released by the Edwards family said. The Dallas County Sheriff's Department and the Dallas County District Attorney's Public Integrity Unit are still investigating the shooting.

Balch Springs police said Tuesday evening that the district attorney's office will decide whether Oliver will be charged. Edwards and the four people with him made a decision to leave what was becoming an unruly party as they heard gunfire and police were arriving, Merritt said, citing what witnesses had told lawyers.

Balch Springs police officers have been instructed not to discuss the ongoing criminal investigation into the shooting death of Jordan Edwards.

"Firing the officer who killed #JordanEdwards is a good start but if I murdered someone at work, firing would be the least of my concerns", Lee Merritt said on Twitter.

The name of the officer has been released as well: Roy Oliver. "The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded". His 16-year-old brother was driving the vehicle, attorneys for the family say.

"Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys", the family statement said.

Penguins chase Holtby, beat Capitals to take 2-0 series lead
If the shot volume is the same from Game 1 then the Penguins will be screwed if Fleury does not continue to play at this level. While everything is butterflies and rainbows in the Penguins net, the Capitals may have a goalie controversy in theirs.

Meanwhile, the Dallas suburb is still reeling over the death of Edwards, 15, a high school freshman who was with his brothers and leaving an event where police were responding to gunshots they heard while investigating a call. "Their young lives will be forever altered".
