France's Macron lays groundwork for transition to presidency

His newly renamed grassroots movement, "Republique en Marche" (Republic on the Move), which was founded only 13 months ago, will finally reveal the vast majority of the 577 candidates who will stand in parliamentary elections in June.

Le Pen had called for France to leave the 28-nation European Union and drop the shared euro currency in favor of bringing back the French franc. Sylvie Goulard, a French deputy to the European Parliament, said Macron would make Berlin his first official visit, with perhaps a stop to see French troops stationed overseas as well.

Michael Roth, Germany's deputy foreign minister, applauded Mr Macron's win but said the result was marred by the fact that 11 million people in France voted for Ms Le Pen.
