Summer reading program at Houston Public Library encourages learning

Summer Reading Program

Community Fair/Summer Reading Kick Off

Each child will have the opportunity to sign up for the summer reading program, and chances to win prizes at the end of the summer.

Children going into kindergarten through eighth grade can register for the library's summer reading program now through Saturday, June 10.

"We couldn't do programs on this scale without the help of grants", Hallauer said. We have simplified the program, with one for infants/toddlers that is for newborns to kids age 2. It makes reading fun by inviting kids to read what they want and when they want. Readers need read only 10 books at their reading level to complete the program. Stopping the slide, they say, is best achieved by encouraging kids to read for their own pleasure over the summer - whether that means classic novels, hot rod magazines, audio books, comics, graphic novels or a marathon of dinosaur books. They encourage language development, and foster a love of books and a lifetime of learning.

Schools participating in the 2017 summer reading include last year's victor, MMS, Brawley Middle School, and eighth graders from Lakeshore Middle School, Mt. Mourne IB School, Pine Lake Preparatory's middle and upper school, as well as Mooresville, Lake Norman and South Iredell High Schools along with area homeschool groups.
