PARIS (AP) - Novak Djokovic's French Open title defense ended with a surprisingly lopsided 7-6 (5), 6-3, 6-0 quarterfinal loss to sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria on Wednesday.
The defeat was Djokovic's first straight-set loss at a Major in four years and comes just 12 months after he completed the career Grand Slam in Paris.
Piers Morgan backtracks on Ariana Grande comments, says he misjudged her
The show opened with a minute of silence for those killed and injured in the attack. "We will not quit or operate in fear". On Friday, Grande visited some of her injured fans at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.
"He was dictating all the points in the first set, making me move a lot".
"I'm grateful for the attention but there are many other players that deserve that as well". I have positive feelings and am playing well. "It's a big challenge, but I'm up for it", added Djokovic. "Previous year he was also playing really well and I had to play one of my best matches on clay to beat him", he said.
Reflecting on his maiden victory over Djokovic, Thiem said he felt the first set was crucial and sensed the Serbian was there for the taking after clinching the opener on a tie-break.
Chasing a 15th major overall, Nadal has conceded 22 games this tournament in reaching the semi-finals - the fewest in glorious French Open career and bettering the 25 he lost in 2006.
Thiem landed in the semifinals for the second straight year - Djokovic downed him 12 months ago - and will no doubt face a tougher test in Nadal, who will certainly be well rested.
Ostapenko wins birthday battle with Bacsinszky to reach French Open final
Jelena Ostapenko hit a double-fault on set point as Timea Bacsinszky leveled at 1-set apiece in the French Open semifinals. Pliskova would cut the deficit to 4-3 only to blaze a forehand long, leaving Halep to serve out the match after two hours.
"All the top players have gone through that and I guess I have to learn lessons and figure how get through".
Djokovic squandered two set points in the opening set.
Wawrinka is now eager to gain revenge on Andy Murray after setting up a re-match of last year's semi-final. "I play a great match or two in a row, and then I play a completely opposite match".
Wawrinka's lone worrying moment resulted when he nearly turned an ankle near the net in the last game against Cilic.
