US Approves Sale Of Drones To India

Last year, India submitted a request for 22 Guardian MQ-9B unmanned aircraft for maritime surveillance as part of a deal worth about $2 billion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will receive a "red carpet" welcome when he arrives at the White House to meet US President Donald Trump on Monday for his first face-to-face meeting. The US embassy in New Delhi said it was aware but referred further inquiries to Washington.

If the Indian navy gets the unarmed surveillance drones it wants to keep watch over the Indian Ocean it would be the first such purchase by a country that is not a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance. India's archrival Pakistan would also likely be opposed to the drone sale.

Following his official engagements, Modi visited a temple and interacted with the Indian community here before embarking for the USA on the second leg of his three-nation tour.

The official said the White House hopes to encourage a "normalization of ties" between the India and Pakistan through bilateral dialogue. Large posters of Trump adorned with marigold flowers were placed throughout the village of mainly mud-brick houses for a renaming ceremony, which was presided over by village heads and an Indian charity.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Modi said his two-day visit to Washington from 25 June was at the invitation of Trump. Modi will be urging a tougher stance on Pakistan over militants that India blames for attacks on its territory.

Other strains have emerged, with the United States vexed by a growing bilateral trade deficit and Trump accusing New Delhi of negotiating unscrupulously at the Paris climate talks to walk away with billions in aid.

But there could be increased strains on trade issues. In making the announcement, the US president said New Delhi had made its participation "contingent on receiving billions and billions and billions of dollars in foreign aid".

Trump has also ordered a review of the highly skilled H-1B worker visa program, a key priority of for the Indian IT industry, with its tech workers getting an estimated 70 per cent of those coveted visas in 2015, according to a 2016 report by the Department of Homeland Security.
