Sony to make vinyl records again after 30-year hiatus

TOKYO-Sony Music Entertainment, owner of storied US music labels Columbia and RCA, said it plans to produce vinyl records for the first time in three decades.

Sony Music is back in the record pressing game after announcing it will open a new pressing plant next year. UK-based HMV also reopened its vinyl-focused store in Shibuya, Japan almost two years ago after this record resurgence. The company originally stopped producing vinyl in 1989 as the music-buying public moved instead to CD and other formats.

Official figures showed vinyl sales were worth £2.4 million in the United Kingdom, compared to the $2.1m amassed from digital downloads.

Sony was a major global player in the development of CDs, which have since taken a back seat to downloads and music streaming. The company says it's installing record-cutting equipment and enlisting the help of older engineers who know how to reproduce the best sound.
