Two Samajwadi Party MLCs have resigned from the membership of the legislative council on Saturday praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Yogi Adityanath. There has been speculation that the BJP is not confident of Maurya's victory in the Assembly by-poll and earlier there had also been rumours that to avoid a defeat, the party may even ask him to resign from the UP cabinet and continue as a Member of Parliament from Phulpur.

Founder president of Rashtriya Shia Samaj, Bukkal Nawab joined the SP in 1992.

Not only SP MLCs but Jaiveer Singh, a Bahujan Samaj Party MLC has also tendered his resignation from his party on Saturday.

Mr. Nawab said he resigned as he was feeling "suffocated" in the SP over the last one year.

Mr. Singh, a close aide of Thakur leader Raja Bhaiya, used the nationalism plank to justify abandoning the Samajwadi party. "People are watching everything", he said. Akhilesh Yadav described the resignations of his party leaders as BJP's political corruption and said that it is happening all across the country. If they invite, then I might go with BJP. "Are they afraid of going to the people?"

BSP chief Mayawati also cried foul and charged the BJP with misusing power and state machinery to target Opposition parties and their legislators.

Talking about Nitish Kumar joining hands with the BJP in Bihar, Akhilesh Yadav mocked at Bihar CM and said,"People who spoke about DNA, now joined NDA". With these resignations, SP's strength in the Council will now be reduced to 63.

The development comes days after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar dumped the RJD and the Congress in the neighbouring state and took the support of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to continue in power.

She said all this had happened despite she agreeing to a discussion on the issue of alleged atrocities against Dalits and Muslims. Mallikarjun Kharge called the decision against his party members "harsh".

The resignations, most likely, will pave the way for the entry of top ministers. including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, into the Legislative Council, as they are mandated to become members of the Assembly or Legislative Council within six months of being appointed a minister.
