A 10-year-old rape victim Thursday delivered a baby at a government hospital in the northern Indian city of Chandigarh, almost three weeks after the country's Supreme Court rejected her abortion plea.
Given the complexities of the case and the tender age of the minor, it was decided not to reveal to the girl that she had delivered a baby, sources said, adding that all that she was been informed is that she would be operated for stones in the stomach. Both the girl and her baby are doing fine, said doctor Dasari Harish, speaking to the AFP news agency from the the northern city of Chandigarh. Her parents got to know of it when they took her to a doctor after she complained of a stomach pain. Questioned by her family, she allegedthat she had been... The court had on May 9 ordered the state to pay Rs 3 Lakh to her under the Victims Compensation Scheme and asked the government to provide all medical facilities to her free-of-cost. She was placed in an intensive care unit and will ultimately be put up for adoption.
The parents of the 10-year old girl, are now looking for ways to put the baby up for adoption as they're anxious about the stigma.
