A 10-year-old rape victim Thursday delivered a baby at a government hospital in the northern Indian city of Chandigarh, almost three weeks after the country's Supreme Court rejected her abortion plea.

Given the complexities of the case and the tender age of the minor, it was decided not to reveal to the girl that she had delivered a baby, sources said, adding that all that she was been informed is that she would be operated for stones in the stomach. Both the girl and her baby are doing fine, said doctor Dasari Harish, speaking to the AFP news agency from the the northern city of Chandigarh. Her parents got to know of it when they took her to a doctor after she complained of a stomach pain. Questioned by her family, she allegedthat she had been... The court had on May 9 ordered the state to pay Rs 3 Lakh to her under the Victims Compensation Scheme and asked the government to provide all medical facilities to her free-of-cost. She was placed in an intensive care unit and will ultimately be put up for adoption.

The parents of the 10-year old girl, are now looking for ways to put the baby up for adoption as they're anxious about the stigma.

Under India's Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, the country doesn't allow abortion after more than 20 weeks of pregnancy, unless they receive permission from the courts.

Rakhi Sharma of YMNA said, "Although she is an adult, PMCH authorities refused to abort her foetus because she was not in a condition to take decisions for herself".

That would be a disaster for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's conservative government , which only holds a one-seat majority. Renunciation won't affect the court decision since the case rests on his eligibility to run in the last election.

Kumari said: "Whatever be the circumstances in which the child was conceived, whatever the trauma of the young mother, the fact remains that the child is also not to blame for being conceived".

The victim was subsequently admitted to GMCH-32 where she was under regular watch of a team of doctors in Chandigarh. "The child is innocent, just like the victim, its mother".
