Harry Dean Stanton Dead: 'Twin Peaks' and 'Big Love' Actor Dies at 91

Kelly gave no further details on the cause. He was a prolific actor for well over six decades, appearing in Alien, Repo Man, Inland Empire, Paris, Texas and so, so much more.

He was broadly cherished around Hollywood, a consumer and smoker and straight talker with a million stories who palled around with Jack Nicholson and Kris Kristofferson among others and was a saint to such more youthful stars and siblings in-celebrating as Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez. "Then he says, 'But I don't want you to do anything". (Nicholson moved in after sharing a place with screenwriter Robert Towne.) They first appeared together in Monte Hellman's Ride in the Whirlwind (1966), which Nicholson also wrote, and Stanton always said he learned about "acting natural" from that experience. He played Tramp in Cool Hand Luke and an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent in The Godfather Part II, before scoring one of his best known roles as engineering tech Alien in Ridley Scott's Alien in 1979, followed by films like Escape from NY. He also starred on HBO's Big Love. His last performance was in the movie Lucky. Regardless, by all accounts the film feels like a cap to Stanton's career.

Science fiction fans probably remember him best as Brett, the cat-loving Nostromo crew member in the original Alien. "Martin Scorsese, John Huston, David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock".

Fitting for a character actor, he only became famous in late middle age.

One of his rare leading roles came in the 1984 road movie Paris, Texas where his turn as a father suffering from amnesia helped director Wim Wenders win the 1984 Palme D'Or in Cannes.

Stanton never wedded, despite the fact that he had an involved acquaintance with performing artist Rebecca De Mornay, 35 years his lesser.

He comes back and finds her in a Houston peep show, where he delivers a 10-minute monologue through a one-way mirror.

Ebert later conceded that "Dream A Little Dream Of Me", a 1989 film starring Corey Haim and Corey Feldman that featured Stanton as a philosophical neighbor was a clear exception.
